Greene Girl
“Greene Girl features Lauren Smith, who sings twangy, sparse numbers that have a gorgeous nature recalling a harnessed version of the Dresden Dolls. Backing her on keyboards is TONY staffer Alex Schechter.” – Time Out New York, 2009
Since 2004, when she first stepped into the NYC music scene, Brooklynite Lauren Smith has been traipsing around with her merry band of men, playing such high-profile venues as The Living Room, Southpaw, CBGB’s and the Knitting Factory. Alex Schechter, a classically-trained vagabond composer, began serenading coffeehouse audiences with Lauren when the two were freshmen in high school.
Ambient pop meets speakeasy jazz in the quirky melodic songs of duo Greene Girl. Cozily straddling the line between an off-off-Broadway musical and ’20s-style speakeasy jazz, their earthy sound is as lively as it is warm. Recently, they completed a month-long residency at Pete’s Candy Store where they wrote a new song each week, based on characters made up by the audience. In October 2009, Greene Girl made their CMJ debut at Googie’s Lounge in Manhattan’s Lower East Side to a packed house.
